SoFly Graffiti Documentary

Director / Camera Op and Editor: Shauna Paul

Post Production Sound and Music: Orion Zane

This project was created over a course of three months from initial contact to completion. I got into contact with Sophy Robson through an online platform and we met over a few drinks in South West London in November 2021, where we discussed creating a short documentary on her and her work. Sophy immediately struck me as a very interesting person and would openly tell me a range of interesting stories about her life and career, from working as a nail artist for celebrities whilst being a single mum to recently transitioning into graffitti art, where she creates work in both commission based and underground settings.

I conducted an interview at her home and edited the interview and integrated the ambient music before any B roll footage was filmed. By having the audio set before the visuals, I was able to listen to the audio over and over again in order to plan and create the right visuals for each section as if I were planning a music video. This allowed me to concisely plan what to shoot and the bulk of the footage was filmed over the course of two days. (with the exception of the very last section before credits.)

The first shoot day consisted of filming Sophy around her local area where she had painted work, into the night where I filmed her in a completative state overlooking the river at Battersea Power Station.

The second day we were up early, travelling in her car a couple hours outside of London and exploring and filming inside of an abandoned building.

A very fun self produced, funded and directed project that reminds me of my interest in creating visuals and documenting people and reality.
